My drawings from Construction Classes.

I saw Glenn Murcutt today in my local suburb!
It was very exciting seeing such an esteemed architect, even if it was a glimpse.
It reminds me of the time when I first saw one of his buildings while on holidays as a kid. It was the Bowali Centre in Kakadu. I can vividly recall walking through the Centre. I was amazed and inspired. Even though I had little architectural knowledge then, the space in the building really made sense to me. The space was defined, refined and beautiful. It referred strongly to it's surrounds of the lush marshes and the rapid kaleidoscope of seasons that is Kakadu. The building was such a sensory experience, as much as Kakadu is. I remember profoundly the buildings sense of narrative as you walked along. It was the subtle gradations and changes with light, scale and volume that suggested this sense of a narrative.
It wasn't the grandest of all buildings, in contrast it was humbling building. And yet its sensory experience surpassed all the tall imposing buildings I had ever visited. I think it's priceless.
I try to remind myself this when I design.
Mr Murcutt's works have been an inspiration, even before read about him years later.
